For four years in a row, enLIGHT has been organizing a HACKference (where Hackathon meets Conference) to help students connect and meet other entrepreneurial minded individuals to collaborate and create a startup.
Founded in 2012, enLIGHT is Canada’s largest student-run nonprofit organization helping students start startups through an inter-collegiate chapter network, connecting, developing and supporting student-run ventures. There is a disconnect between students with technical know-how (the hackers) and those with business specialties (the conference goers). Events like HACKference help to bridge that gap to help young entrepreneurs connect with like-minded individuals with different business and technical skills.
All delegates and participants are selected from a rigorous application and selection process to ensure the highest quality of student founders, innovators, creators and doers are attending.
The event also includes business and technical workshops, as well as keynote speeches. This year, HACKference was able to score Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful) as their keynote speaker.
This year, we were very honored to be asked to attend as Judges at this years HACKference held in Toronto. We joined fellow startup owners and entrepreneurs who assisted the event by listening to the students business ideas and pitches and providing our feedback and advice.
We learned a lot and walked away very inspired to see these young entrepreneurs in action with their high energy and creative juices flowing. Most of the ideas were related to technology and building some type of application that will assist
In the end, there is a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner, all receiving great prizes such as cash and mentorship from experienced business owners.
Here were the winning ideas:
1st Prize: Unstuck
2nd Prize: Reakt
3rd Prize: Parrophraser
We look forward to working
We hope these prize winners will continue their business endeavours and pick up where they left off. These types of events really light the fire in young entrepreneurs and the continued mentorship will hopefully guide these prize winners to the next phase.
